Giveaway for The Price of Freedom by Lauren Parkes

Howdy! It's Karen with another giveaway from INDIE Books Gone Wild. This time I have a rather intriguing young adult book that I'd classify as dystopian fiction: The Price of Freedom by Lauren Parkes. I did the line editing and Jennifer did the proofreading for this book.

Title: The Price of Freedom
Author: Lauren Parkes
Genre: Young Adult (dystopian)
Length: 313 pages
Buy Link: Amazon

Synopsis:
If only the bombing of Dover hadn’t gone wrong. Or maybe that was exactly how they planned it: four dead border guards and a stolen casement of fertility medication. The looted cargo of Fertility shocked the nation—a nation grieving the loss of natural fertility, a people reliant upon assisted birthing schemes to provide a next generation.

It lodged a stone the size of a coconut in the windpipes of every twenty-something female with a pulse. Everyone that is, except Jade Rose. Newlywed Jade did not need Fertility to get pregnant. Focusing on a way to stay under the radar amidst rising political tensions, Jade inadvertently finds herself the target of resistance movement Freedom.

David ‘Blue’ Azure should not have been anywhere near Dover terminal when the bomb exploded. The gun wasn’t even his. Dejected, he enlists in Freedom. But when a plan to recover the stolen Fertility becomes a kidnapping, Blue comes face to face with Jade.

Jade and Blue should have nothing in common. Young, pregnant wife of a pharmaceutical heir and a murderer.

But they did. Once.

On the day of the Dover attack.

Giveaway for The Mirrored City by Michael J. Bode

Howdy! Karen here with another giveaway from INDIE Books Gone Wild. The Mirrored City by Michael J. Bode is the second installment in the Architects of the Grand Design series. It is a fantasy series (on the darker side of fantasy) and has a rather compelling cast of characters. I did the line editing for this book and Tia did the proofreading.

Title: The Mirrored City (Architects of the Grand Design, Book 2)
Author: Michael J. Bode
Genre: Dark fantasy
Length: 367 pages
Buy Link: Amazon

Synopsis:
Maddox is a broken man, held together by the will of his sentient sword. Heath is a prophet of a forgotten god— and an assassin. Jessa is an inexperienced ruler, struggling to broker a truce between her warring nation and her enemies.

That plan for peace is threatened by the local politics of the Mirrored City, a place ruled by dual theocratic governments. Beneath the tenuous accord between the two halves of the city lies centuries of hostility that threaten to break out into open war. Treacherous conspiracies, deadly diplomacy, a string of grisly murders, and the return of the Old Magic could spell the end for all Creation.

No one is who or what they seem. A quest for answers leads the champions to a deadly battle with their greatest foe yet: themselves.

Utterly defeated, and mourning the loss of his eldest son in the conflict, he has spent the last months following the battle away from home. Upon his return, he has to confront the animosity of the populace, made even worse by his bringing a heathen girl back with him.

Beaten, downcast and in despair, he is resigned to merely spending the remainder of his days in meek quietude. That would prove impossible, however, as he's soon implicated in an escalating political and religious conflict within the city. To make matters worse, his youngest son and the foreign girl are dragged deep into the whirlwind of the crisis.

And in the meantime, they are about to set over Seten.

Giveaway for Nightfall (Book Two of the Chronicles of Arden)

Howdy! Karen here with another giveaway from INDIE Books Gone Wild. Last fall, I edited (and did a giveaway) for A Call to Arms by Shiriluna Nott and SaJa H. The authors are back with the follow-up, Nightfall. I did the line editing on this book, and Jennifer did the proofreading.

A Call to Arms was one of my favorite books from last year (not just favorites among those I've edited, but favorites that I read), and I had been eagerly awaiting the next book. And Nightfall does not disappoint. It does, as the title suggests, get darker than the first book as the characters have grown up a little (a couple of years have passed since the end of the first book) and the dangers both inside and outside the realm become all too real. In fact, the book has a lot of intense moments that had me at the edge of my seat!

Title: Nightfall: Book Two of the Chronicles of Arden
Authors: Shiriluna Nott and SaJa H.
Genre: Epic fantasy; LGBT fiction
Length: 424 pages
Buy Link: Amazon

Synopsis: Gibben Nemesio thought his life was over the day he received a conscription notice demanding he train to be a soldier. When he left his home for Silver City, he never expected he'd thwart a terrible plot to murder the King and become an overnight hero—and he definitely hadn't expected to find love in the form of a handsome mage trainee named Joel.

Three years later, Gib has fought his way from lowborn farmer to hold the coveted position as understudy to the seneschal. Despite heightening tensions between the King and High Council and the rumors of impending war still terrorizing the people of Arden, Gib finds solace in the company of his wise mentor, loyal friends, and beloved companion.

But with the arrival of an ominous message from a powerful enemy in the north, Gib quickly realizes peace is fleeting in a world where chaos lurks in every shadow, and treacherous forces—from both outside the country and within—threaten to destroy everything he holds dear.

Giveaway for Amendments by H.M. Lynn

Howdy! Karen here with another IBGW book giveaway. I'm thrilled to announce the recent release of Amendments by H.M. Lynn. I did the line editing on this book, and Mollie did the proofreading.

I really enjoyed editing this book because the concept was quite fascinating: each person is allowed to "amend" their lives twice, basically to go back to a situation and make a different choice. But a fascinating concept is only one part of this book--really it is the relationship between the two main characters, the sisters, that this book is all about. And that's where the book really excels. It uses this fascinating concept as a backdrop to explore this relationship. My favorite line in the book is when a character says, "Wasted amendments aren’t the ones that don’t work out; they’re the ones you didn’t need an envelope to fix in the first place."

Title: Amendments
Author: H.M. Lynn
Genre: Speculative fiction
Length: 353 pages
Buy Link: Amazon

Synopsis from Amazon: Emelia must choose. Her sister or her soulmate.

In a world not dissimilar to our own, the Administration have ensured that the human race should not have to live with any regrets. Like millions before her, Emelia now has the chance to go back and make the 'correct' decisions. The little envelope that contains her amendment will change not just her life, but that of the people she loves the most. Her sister Finola, whose reckless and self-destructive nature has led her dangerously close to the sinister Marchers movement, and Gabe, the rock that has been holding the remnants of her family together for as long as she can remember.

Caught between saving Finola or happiness with Gabe, she must struggle to predict how the ripples of her amendments will spread. Two envelopes, two choices, one life.

What would you amend?

Maybe you're a devoted reader who wants to tell the world about your favorite books. No matter your goals, UtopYA will envelop you with open arms as well as inspire you beyond belief! The book conference brings female writers of contemporary and supernatural YA and NA fiction together with their fans. Book lovers from far and wide, including authors and readers as far away as the UK, Scotland, and South Africa. This year’s expected attendance of 700-1,000 will be its highest ever.

Those who are interested in a thriving book community will enjoy panels and camaraderie. Readers will not only meet some of their favorite authors (and even do karaoke with them!), but they'll attend educational panels to learn about honing their craft. Whether it's writing or editing a book, designing covers, developing marketing strategies, blogging - they've got a panel for that and more!

Keynote speakers Denise Grover Swank, Lauren Miller and Kim Holden will kick off each day followed by educational panels, games, screenings and more. These panels contain expert advice to aspiring authors and book bloggers, plus open discussion for audience participation. Over 100 exhibitors will showcase their work and meet readers; a B&N and indie bookstore are also on site. In addition to the cosplay karaoke on Friday night, the highly anticipated UtopYA Awards will take place Saturday evening, where nominees are honored thanks to their peers and fans. We'll get dressed up and dance the night away as we fangirl over our favorite book boyfriends ;)

In addition, there is a book signing on Saturday that is open to the public - all UtopYA asks is a book donation or $5 to their charity, Book 'Em. In return, you'll meet bestselling authors, plus a chance to discover plenty of new ones! More than a few women have called this event a life-changing experience! Congratulations to Our utopYA Con Trip Winner!

Happy Friday, everyone! Jo here. So, over the last year, we had a little contest running for our editors. Tia and I will be attending utopYA Con in June of this year, and we thought it might be awesome to bring one of our own along to join in the fun. We put it out there, and now, we've chosen a winner.

Congratulations to:
Karen Robinson!

She'll get a ticket to the four day conference and a hotel room for the duration.

Here's a little about Karen:

Howdy! I’m Karen Robinson, and I’m excited to be joining the editing team at Indie Books Gone Wild. I’ve been an avid reader since I was in elementary school, reading anything I could get my hands on although my favorite genres are fantasy and dystopian fiction. In college, I majored in English and spent a couple of years as a copy editor for a financial firm and then a medical publisher. An opportunity led me to graduate school where I received a PhD in medieval literature (and graded many many freshman composition papers).

I decided to leave academia after having a child and to go back to my editing roots. Since then, I’ve been doing a wide variety of editing work from websites for plastic surgeons to eBooks about social media as well as fiction, which is where my editing (and reading) heart lies. I’ve had the pleasure of working with indie author Shane W. Shelton on his Believing Magic series and look forward to developing editing relationships with other authors. When I’m not reading (and even sometimes when I am), I can be found with two sticks and some yarn in my hands—knitting is my other passion.

Using The Chicago Manual of Style - 16th Edition, my goal is not to rewrite your book or create a book that I would have written. Instead, I aim to keep your voice—but just make it a cleaner version of your voice. Ultimately, you are the author and ownership of the book is yours, but working with an editor is a valuable way of strengthening your book and making it the best that it can be so that readers can get great enjoyment out of it.

Her clients love her! Check this out:

“Karen took on my 'MASSIVE' project and did a fantastic job taking my raw manuscript and turning it into a 'book.' She didn't alter the story line, or over edit, which was one of my key concerns. And at the same time she wasn't afraid to do what was just plain 'needed.' One of my problem areas (especially with my earlier writing) was with paragraphing correctly. She addressed that issue wonderfully, which means she not only read it and proofed it but had to 'digest' the material and make decisions as to flow and pace. All changes were made in a way that was 'tracked' and easy to review her edits and tweaks.”
–Shane W. Shelton, author of the Believing Magic series

If you're at the con, stop by the IBGW table and say hello to Tia, Karen, and me! We'd love to see you.

Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!

Celebrating Two Years - EIC Tia Silverthorne Bach

Happy Friday, IBGW followers! Jo here. Today, I’d like to share something with you all about my fellow IEC, Tia Silverthorne Bach. You see, today is her two year anniversary with INDIE Books Gone Wild, and I’m gonna tell you a little about how that relationship formed. We’re gonna have a little giveaway at the end of this post, so get ready! Anyone who subscribes to our newsletter will also get an e-mail today about the books IBGW has worked on over the last twelve months. So, lots of amazing things happening on the blog today. Ready? Grab that coffee, get your clicking finger ready, and let’s get going!

I met Tia during the Author Blog Challenge in June of 2012. She and I hit it off right away. We have a lot of things in common—yes, other than being complete grammar nerds and lovers of the written word in general. Usually, when I’m thinking a certain way about something, she’s in complete agreement. We fostered a friendship that’s proven to be one of the best I’ve ever made.

Not only is she an amazing person, she’s also one hell of an editor. It’s rare to find someone who cares so much about their client(s), and her values made her an indispensable addition to the IBGW team. Together, we formed the idea to keep all editing in house so a better product emerged on the other side. It was tiresome to hear the complaints about Indie novels being poorly edited, written, and covered. Our mission, from day one, was to change that stigma.

How many people do you meet in your lifetime that hold the same values and have the same ideals as you? Let me tell you, they’re few and far between.

Not only is Tia a stellar editor, she’s also a fantastic author and book reviewer. If you haven’t been to her personal blog, I invite you to poke around here. For her book review blog, go here. But, I digress.

Last year, almost two years to the day from the time I first interacted with Tia, we met for the first time in person. Sure, we’d had Skype conversations, but it’s not the same thing. She’s just as lovely in person as she is via e-mail. I think, if someone needed a pair of shoes, she’d give them the ones she was wearing and never think twice about it. But she demands respect at the same time, and doesn’t let people push her around or take advantage of her kindness.

I’m so grateful to be able to call Tia my friend, and even more grateful she decided to partner with me in this crazy IBGW venture.

So, to celebrate her awesomeness, I’m doing a little giveaway of all the books she’s helped bring to market with IBGW over the last year (or written). Enjoy entering and helping me celebrate the amazing business that’s INDIE Books Gone Wild with Tia by my side at the helm!

List of books included:
I, Zombie
Tbinkerknese 101
Chasing Shadows
Not Born Here: Stories from Marsden, NC
Fractured Glass: A Novel Anthology

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Do you know Tia? Tell me a little story about how you met!

Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!
